What are Solar-Assisted Heat Pumps?

A heat pump is a device that does just what the name implies - move heat from one place to another. In the case of solar assisted heat pumps, from the surrounding air to the water in your storage tank.

A solar assisted heat pump is designed to deliver exceptional efficiencies night and day, rain or shine by harvesting energy from both ambient air and solar radiation when available. When the temperature drops, the solar thermal panel helps pick up the slack. When the sun sets, the compressor will still produce hot water using 2-3 times less energy than an electric water heater. This combination of solar and heat pump technology offers the benefits of both without the limitations.

Save on your SAHP install with state and federal solar tax credits

As of 2023, the New York State tax credit covers 25 percent of the cost of qualified solar equipment and the federal tax credit covers 30 percent. If you claim both tax credits, you can save thousands of dollars on a typical solar assisted heat pump installation.

We help all of our customers navigate the tax credit application process so you can access savings, hassle-free.

Do SAHP systems qualify for solar equipment incentives?

Yes! As of 2023, the New York State tax credit covers 25 percent (up to $5000) of total project cost and the federal tax credit covers 30 percent of total project cost. You can claim both tax credits for an SAHP system.

Am I eligible to claim the New York State solar energy tax credit?

You may qualify for the New York State tax credit if:

You purchased the solar energy system equipment.

You entered into a written agreement for the lease of solar energy system equipment, or you entered into a written agreement that spans at least ten years for the purchase of power generated by solar energy system equipment not owned by you.

The system must use solar radiation to produce energy for heating, cooling, hot water, or electricity for residential use. The system must also be installed and used at your principal residence in New York State.

Will I get a tax refund if the value of the credit is more than what I owe?

No, the state and federal tax credits are non-refundable. If your tax credit is worth $1000 and you owe $500 in taxes, your tax liability for that year will be $0 and the remaining $500 will carry over to the following year. You may carry over the tax credit until you have received the full credit or 5 tax years have passed.

Am I eligible to claim the federal solar energy tax credit?

You may qualify for the federal tax credit if:

Your system was installed between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2034.

The system is located at your residence in the United States.

You own the system, or you purchased an interest in an off-site community solar project, if the electricity generated is credited against, and does not exceed, your home’s electricity consumption.

The system is new or being used for the first time.

The 30 percent federal tax credit lasts until Dec. 31, 2032, after which it will drop to 26 percent in 2033, then 22 percent in 2034, and disappear in 2035, unless Congress continues it.
