A combined heat and power system generates heat and electricity at the same time. This is also called cogeneration. A micro chp unit houses a generator that runs on natural gas or propane.
Electricity produced from the generator is consumed in the building saving on the electricity bill, or in some cases excess electricity can be metered back to the grid. A byproduct of this process is thermal energy, which can also be used to space heat the building or create hot water.
Combined heat and power systems have many advantages, including:
- Increased efficiency,
- Decreased energy costs, and
- Insurance against volatile energy prices
- Emit less carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Return electricity back to the grid for credit
